I have a sword, I mean a BIG sword. what fixtures would be best for hanging it?
Question:it's a big unsheathed sword. about 5 1/2 feet with a large curve. It's somewhat like Sephiroth's Matsamune. What are good ideas for hanging it unsheathed and not blocking alot of the blade?
Answers:
Well, they have stands made for holding curved spears, that could work. Unless you have a lot of space, the standard katana display (http://www.maj.com/gallery/jadefalcon0/k... doesn't really work. Again, I would go for the vertical style (http://www.battleorders.co.uk/acatalog/u... which are slightly harder to find, but still easily accessible on places like eBay. The second kind of stand works best because the shift in weight and center of gravity doesn't matter, and the sword can be held with fair stability. On top of the, it's compact, because instead of getting in the way of things horizontally, it just goes up vertically with out getting in the way of anything.
You should take it to a frame shop and let them do it...I have a big Samurai sword that was custom made and I had it custom framed and it looks amazing in my asian inspired dining room. Mines in a big black like shadow box frame with red velvet interior...you can see the entire blade because the little hooks inside holding it up are small. It might cost a little more, but it's safer and better looking than just hanging a sword on the wall...it would suck if you ran into the wall and it decapitated you.
There are a number of stores that specialize in the gaming arena (ie dungeons and dragons etc.)
I have seen a number of various hooks and mounting for their displays. Might want to talk to the owners and see where they get them.
Just did a quick Google for "Wall mount for swords". A number of good hits came up. Here is one.
I have 14 swords displayed in my house and I just use long nails in the wall to rest them. All you have to do is find the balance points on the weapon, mark off where you want to put the sword and just put the nails in. If you can put them into the studs in the wall, that is best for a bigger sword, but I have a 5' claymore on the wall with just the nails in the drywall and have no problems. It is the cheapest option and the nails are small enough not to hide any of the blade. The frame shop idea is a nice one, but will probably cost you over $100.
