I would suggest finding a color that everyone can agree on and pain the walls that. Then each person pick a piece of furniture for them to sit in and an extra for company. Get a colorful rug to be placed right in front of the tv
Well there are many ways by witch you can make any space more comfortable, you can add some warm colors to your walls, have some side lamps to give you warm effects, maybe add some fluffy cushions to your couches, you can have a center table where you could place your remote controls, maybe one that is upholstered with a nice fabric, some books and magazines you'd want to read in your free time, you can also add a recliner if its possible space wise, a lazy chair is always a wonderful seating after a long day at work :)
Accent pillows and throws for the couch! I used this in my first house and they looked great. Rugs also do alot for a room as well.
Inexpensive slip covers that match or complement each other for the couches; a thick comfy throw, some great throw pillows. Put some money into a really fabulous soft area rug. Some "floating"shelves (ie from West Elm or Pottery Barn) on the walls for some framed pictures and momentos. A plant if it will grow.Some simple, clean lined parsons like tables (Ikea), and paint on the walsl.
