Getting glued down carpet pad up...?
Question:We want to re finish the original hardwood floors in our house, but the previous owners glued the carpet pad down to the original floors. How do we get it up without damaging the original floors so that they can be refinished?
Actually we can rip the carpet pad up with no problem, but the glue stuff is left all over the floor.
Answers:
I refinish floors for a living. I always use a 16 or 20 grit sand paper to remove the glue and then use 36 grit to get the marks out of the floor then go to 60 grit and finish sanding with 100 grit sand paper. then if you can get a floor buffer get a 240 sticky back sand paper and buff the floor it will be really smooth. then apply your polyurathane. put on at least 3 coats and use 220 grit to sand between coats.makes a very nice floor. if you want to see how mine turn out i do have some before and after pics.
ewe.you're gonna have to totally refinish the floors. I have hardwood too.in three rooms. DO NOT USE A BELT SANDER!!
Get a sander(cheap) and start with a course sandpaper and work your way up to a very fine sand paper. Some people would stain the floor and then polyurethane the floor, but I like the old fashioned way/look, so I would just mop it after it's sanded, let it dry and then put Jhonson's paste wax on it and buff buff buff until the cows come home. It will look like a church floor and the wax also "seals" your hardwood floor. It's a lot of effort initially but after that first time you'll be able to run a dust mop across it and get a high shine.until it's time to wax again.about 3 months. good luck to ya.
