How do I remove a bad stain job on my deck? I want to restain it.?
Question:Two years ago I stained my deck, I did all the usual proceedures, used Behr Stain Remover (no. 64) followed by their cleaner (no. 63) and then used the 501 Natural Cedar to stain it. I rushed in some spots and now the stain looks more like a bad painting job. The stain didn't really sink into the wood, it is still a bit tacky to this day. I want to redo it, what is the BEST way to do so? Sanding? Using the Stain Remover again? A powerful cleaning solution?
Answers:
you can either use a liquid deck stripper or go right over the top of it with an oil based solid color stain, the original stain that's on there is oil based correct if so stick with oil and you get what you pay for and most of the Behr products are crap, go to a real paint store like a Ben Moore dealer or Sherwin Williams and for a stain use some ones product like Cabots who's business is stain, good luck Les the painter
Sounds like sanding is the way to go. Sand the whole deck so the stain job you do where you want it does not possibly contrast or conflict with the previous staining job. That sounds like your best bet if you already tried stain remover.
