Removing paint from oil based paint from woodwork?
Question:I have a home built in 1928 that has several layers of oil based paint on it. How difficult is it to remove it? What is the process and how do I stain afterwards?
Answers:
To remove the oil based paint you would need to use a product made by Jasco. It's a stripper that you would apply to the paint and then scrape it. Another method would be to use a heat gun. It is a JOB and won't be too easy.
As for staining... After you stripped everything you would need to lightly sand just to rough up the surface and get rid of any paint that may still be on there. Then use tack cloth to get rid of any remaining particles. You may need to use a prestain conditioner to make sure the wood absorbes the stain evenly. Then if you wanted to stain the wood you should use an oil based stain-Minwax and Olympic are both very good. Then apply the poly-make sure it's also oil based. You should do one coat, let it dry, lightly sand, use tack cloth to get off the particles, then apply poly again until you have 3 coats. Make sure you are using china bristle brushes and clean up with mineral spirits. Good luck!
It's got lead in it so if you have children don't bother, for the amount of time and materials and just the pain in the a** the local governments have made it to remove lead your better off just replacing the whole jamb and door or whatever woodwork you have, sorry, Good luck Les the painter
There is a really safe product called SOyGEL. It safely removes old, dried on lead paint from surfaces. Since it is a gel, it releases fewer fumes into the air...read about it on the link below...
