How long do you have to wait before you can stain treated wood?
Question:We just replaced some steps & the railing on our front porch. So obviously, now It doesn't match the rest of the porch. I was told that we needed to wait to stain the new treated wood 2-3 months from now. Is that true and if not then when is it safe to stain it? THANKS!
Answers:
Yes it is true your should wait for the wood to fully dry out. Even though the wood may appear dry the inside still has some moisture to it due to the treating process. If this is not allowed to dry you may not get an even finish when staining.
you dont need to wait at all and the sooner you do treat it to stop water penetration the better
make sure its a dry day and the new wood is also dry before starting to stain as the rain could spoil any new stain before its had time to dry, and if you have started staining and it rains make sure you cover the new wood with a waterproof cover
hope this helps

If it is pressure treated wood, it will often have a greenish tint to it. You should wait a bit till that colour is leeched out, a few weeks or so, or ask at your lumber supply store. As for staining, keep in mind you will have to restain over time, and more often if it is an opaque stain, not a clear stain. You may want to look at simply treating the wood with "Thompson's Water Seal" and not stain. This you will also want to redo, but not as often, and it won't show the wear and aging as quickly as a stain would.
