Trying to pick cabinets for a new house.?
Question:What have most people found to be the most popular? Anyone a fan of white or is wood more popular and if so what wood? Kitchen is not that big but not really small either.
Answers:
We just had a home built that was completed about a year and a half ago. What I put in and what I have found is very popular still is Maple cabinetry. I had my cabinets custom made but you don't have to go to that expense. Just don't do OAK. Oak is so out now.Oak has been the cabinet choice for wood for about 30 years now...that and Cherry, which is still acceptable and quite nice. But Oak...don't do it. My maple cabinets have a honey finish with a chocolate glaze with the center island cabinets done in a black stain.it's quite stunning and I love it.
I would highly suggest also, if you can afford it, instead of laminate counter tops, do a granite in something like New Venetian Gold, if you do the maple cabinets. These go together nicely. The lightness of the Maple cabinets will make your kitchen lighter and appear larger. Also, if you can get the cabinets staggered (different heights), that will also create a designer look that doesn't cost a lot more. If you are building, I would also suggest not doing a soffit..Let the cabinet tops have a space above them (space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling) AND if you can...again, if you are building, you can do this but it can be done even if you are NOT building if you have the space above the cabinets. Do a rope light on top of the cabinets (they should have a crown moulding on the top of them anyway which will keep the rope lighting from showing). This will create a beautiful glow at nighttime. If you're unable to create this look on the tops of the cabinets be sure you at least do the undercounter flourescent lighting. It's great for a nightlight as much as for preparation lighting. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!
I had my kitchen cabinets replaced with Kraftmaid.
These are the cabinets:

I was very pleased with not only Lowe's, where I ordered them, but with the installation, as well.
They hold up well, and because they are laminate, the are very easy to maintain (soap and water cleans them).
Topped with a Corian countertop and sink, it can't be beat!
depends on the style of your home. Follow the original intent of the designers.
You can get some professional design advice and have the designer or stylist come to your home to help make suggestions.
IMHO Wood finish is the way to go. I don't like wood or Pergo floors in the kitchen, it's ceramic or nothing.
As the first poster said, KraftMaid makes some of the most wonderful cabinetry. There are other lines out there, but for the mid sized kitchen, you will rarely be able to beat the value that KraftMaid offers.
From a design point of view, I would encourage you to visit Home Depot. Because they have many different lines of cabinetry to choose from and you may find that you like Thomasville.
As a designer, I am a fan of whatever my client wants. So, if you want white cabinets, by all means for it. White is very crisp and clean. It's modern and if you pair then with a great black quartz countertop it would look awesome.
When it comes to wood cabinetry, oak is the most popular because it is very strong and very economical.
I think the most versatile wood is maple and if you want cabinetry that goes with any style, I would encourage you to select maple. KraftMaid has wonderful glazes and they all look wonderful.
Also, are you open to mixing light and dark cabinetry. It looks wonderful and it creates a more custom look for your kitchen. The more custom looking that the kitchen is, the more value it adds to your home.
