Question:I am making 4 very large curtains for my child's school auditorium. The fabric must be fire resistant, not too heavy for a home sewing machine, and pretty as well.

well I would suggest whatever fabric you use there is a spray you can buy im not sure where but you spray it on the back of the fabric to fire proof or rather fire retard the fabric and since its for a stage the audience wont see the back so its not a problem as far as light weight cotton or linen is the best thoe linen wrinkles and is the least fire proof material cotton can do it but I would imagine the fireproofing would bleed slightly so then you get into heavier fabrics like velvet or silks neither of which is inexpensive however they are more durable thats another issue the heavier the fabric the longer it will last and there by save the school money by not having to repace it as often... so I would say either velvet or a heavy cotton
