If you can I would paint each of their furnishings separately but as a group i.e. boy #1 his bed/dresser/table all red boy #2 bed/dresser/shelves all yellow boy #3 bed/table/shelves all blue. You could actually do a really interesting room by painting the section of wall behind their beds a co-ordinating color with their furnishings. That way I think they would all feel they have their own space. Let them choose the color they want to make it even more personal and when everything is finished let each boy put their hand in a paint tray and put their hand prints on their section of the wall.
When I was sharing with my sister I found that bunkbeds worked quite well because we had our own little space away from each other. If you put the bunkbed next to a wardrobe then the person on the top bunk can use the top of the wardrobe as a bedside table. Hope this helps.
