What is the difference between paint thinner and lacquer thinner?

Question:

Answers:
One is for paint while the other is for lacquer.

There is a rather big difference, but more importantly, why do you ask. If you were to use the wrong one in the wrong place, it could create a bad situation. Both products will thin an oil based product but not both a lacquer based product. Lacquer thinners dry very quickly compared to paint thinners. These products are very sensitive and can create a fire if use incorrectly. Be more specific and check a web site from the manufacturer and they will tell you the difference in more detail.
Both are solvents but used for very different reasons and cannot be substituted. Paint thinner is used for oil base paints and varnishes. Can also be used for removing tar, grease and tree saps off various surfaces. This is one of the more milder products in the solvent family.
Lacquer thinner is a very strong and more caustic solvent. It is used for thinning and cleaning of lacquer based paints, such as many car finishes, and ;acquer finishes. It is also used for removing ink from metal surfaces and adhesive residues. Lacquer thinner can deteriorate many surfaces very rapidly. It is always good to preform a test in an inconspicuous area before using.
Always read directions on paint for cleaning and thinning instructions. Disposal of rags, brushed and tools can be critical. Always let tools and rags dry out in an open area before disposal. Be careful and good luck.
I an a painting contractor and the above post is completly correct...laquer thinner is a wonderful product but must be used in very specific circumstances and with much more caution than paint thinner
