A new roof on an old house?
Question:What is the best way to stop a roof from leaking if I dont have any money? I can't afford a new roow alltogether. The whole roof is bad and the house is about 720 sqf. it has a tar paper roof that is realy old.

There is no short cut to fix your problem but if you have checked on financial aid and had no luck the only thing I can think of if you can find out exactly where your roof if leaking you might try some roof patch, they sell it by the gallon or 5 gallon bucket and try to seal it that way. If its only a small leak you can buy some silicone caulking but it will only do a very small amount of space. If you can access your attic and try to find exactly where the leak is and again on how bad it is. Any Roofer will tell you they even have new roofs that leak. Just try your best to isolate where its coming from and go from there...Hope this helps
Tarps is a short-term solution, but it sounds like you need a new roof now. Any grant money available in your community? Call your local government agencies for assistance.
Unfortunately, the house needs a new roof. Call you city / county to see if grants are available for low income people like yourself. The house will fall apart without an adequate roof. along with mold and termites.
Get an estimate on how much it would be to patch the roof. Would you be able to do it yourself, or trade jobs with a neighbor who could or would? You could just patch where it is leaking. YOu could also put a plastic painters cloth over the area? Be creative, and find a good solution. I use plastic on my patio, and it keeps us dry, but be sure to make sure it is down tight, and wind can't lift it. You will need a little money,sorry. But tear it all off and replace with 30lb felt. This could last you a year or more depending on the instalation. Use roofing nails with lath 4'oc vertical. Hope for no huge wind storms. Good luck.
