Is it okay to paint over wallpaper?
Question:My bedroom has a nice wallpaper that i applied approx 4 years ago. It is in excellent shape however i now want a more contemporary look. I am going to paint but i really don't want to take the wallpaper down. Is this okay and is it healthy?
Answers:
i am not aware of any health reason you can not paint over wallpaper,it is no a great idea to paint over it,it can be done, make sure that you put on a coat of primer with a stain blocker in it,this well help keep the color from bleeding into the paint.
It is NOT a good idea, but can be done. ~
I agree.. .it's not a good idea but i've seen it done esp in situations where it's a pain to get it down off the wall. If u applied a sizing to the walls b/4 applying u'r wallpaper.. the wallpaper should come down fairly easy.
as far as health wise... it should b ok... wallpaper vs paint... which do u think is healthy. hehe..
they make scoring tool to help getting the paper down. it's work but in the end, i think u will think it's worth it.
never, it will be more work to do to take it off, but is the best.
I wouldn't do it .
Wallpaper is easy enough to get off, maybe you could take it off 3 walls and leave the other as a feature wall seeing you like the wallpaper.
No because when the wallpaper starts to fall of the pant will fall of with it.
If the wallpaper is in GOOD condition YES . GO for it. It will look good/
As said before, not really a good idea. Removing the wallpaper will be a MAJOR hassle ! But painting over it might not give it the look you want. And depending on the color of the wallpaper, and the new paint color, you may also have a problem there as well. Only four years ? What if you don't like the paint afterwards ?
I doubt it would hurt anything. If it were me I would take the wallpaper down first but it's up to you. I don't see why you couldn't so if you want to paint over it then go for it... Painting over wallpaper is not going to affect your health lol... We put wallpaper over painted walls all the time so painting over wallpaper isn't much different lol.. I don't see anything wrong with so by all means paint away.
Have fun!
removing wallpaper is not that hard!! just get a steamer and it should make it easier. it would actually be harder to remove the wallpaper after you have painted over it.
There is no health issue for painting over wall paper. It is done everyday. As said before, Your best results will be from removing the paper before painting but if you want to paint over it make sure you use "Kilz"primer. Two reasons for this...
1- It is a stain blocker and hides the colors in the paper.
2- It will allow latex to stick. If you paint over the wall paper with plain latex, it will scratch off easily from just bumping against it.
