How do I add a railing to my deck?
Question:I have a 14 x 16 foot deck between my house and garage. I want to add a railing along the open sides. I am trying to determine the best way to attach it to the deck and the house.
Answers:
To connect it to the house, your best bet is to anchor a 4x4 to the house. You would need to drill into the concrete for that. Now to anchor it to the deck, I don't know what your's looks like, but most likely you would have to pull up a piece of decking every do many feet and cut it down to fit a 4x4 into that spot and anchor the 4x4 to the joist underneath. Then just run the railing all the way across the 4x4s. You will have to make sure the 4x4s are set at the same height and use bolts to sturdy them to the deck and house.
Go to one of the big box home improvement stores-- they have a selection of prebuilt railings & railing kits that need to be assembled. They come with the fittings to fasten to your deck. If you are feeling frisky and want to make your own from scratch then you can make your own from treated lumber or cedar or pipe or whatever material suits your fancy. If you are going to use 4x4 posts for the uprights of the railing they also sell metal holders that screw to your deck so you don't have to undo your deck flooring to mount the posts (you'll find these in the store section that has the metal joist hangers, etc.) There are tons of ways you can design and make your own railing system and it all depends on your creativity and energy. Good luck
