I want my bedroom to look more mature and less little kid. What r some things i can do on a small budget??
Question:I am 14 years old and my room has a single bed. It has recently been painted with the walls cream. I have a large mirrored woodrobe. The wall wear my bed is, is a brick wall and i am considering painting the bricks or rendering it. I also have a large window which looks out to a pool.

Maybe have a nice lounge next to the window with a reading lamp (really tall ones that set on the floor). You can pick up single lounges really cheap from opshops...
A peice of art either on a hall table (again- cheap from opshop) or a framed painting on a wall.
Some single colour curtains will help to finnish your room, as will a nice clear floor.
Ultimately keep your room uncluttered.
A standing floor lamp (like a torchiere) placed in a corner would help; as would some tasteful framed art (not posters). You can find either of these for a song; no need to spend a fortune on the art.
Of course, the free options are to keep the room clean. Adults don't (hopefully) have dirty rooms. A clean room always looks more "mature".
In order to make one's boudoir look mature I suggest beer cans on the floor and some take-away wrappers scattered near the door.
A small sign over the door titled "Adolescence is Achieved" ought to make the room feel better.
i saw these tips on the telly the other day, go to a craft store, or a haberdashery that sells fabric, pick out some really funky colours and it should be rather cheap for a small bit,
then go to a cheap shop and buy some funky frames, you can get some really good cheap ones! put that fabric into the frames and you have some really cheap really cool modern art work for your walls
do your parents allow candles? you could always buy some nice bright candles say in red or purple, or a nice colour to contrast with the white on your walls and put them in wrought iron holders, that always looks really nice
do you have an ikea?? they sell really cheap things too
depending on where you are in the world there may be cheap stores that sell things that are really modern., do google searches for things like home decor
dress a bedroom for under $100 stuff like that!!
Try adding posters, as mature as you wish, even if just full page spreads from magazines you read, otherwise, try getting hold of at least one framed picture, anything you like, it really makes a room look more mature, but can be of anything you want. Little things will make the room look better, having less "kid" things on display will really make a difference, trying sorting out your possessions before anything else, will give you more space to arrange stuff too.
Once you've done that, if the actual room needs redecorating, a simple coat of paint wouldn't cost too much, and you can always paint it yourself (make sure you lay newspaper down and move everything out of the way so you don't get paint on anything)
As for the window, what type of curtains do you have? that can have a big impact on the room, especially when they're closed.
since your room color is cream, you should decide on an accent color and get accessories that are pleasing. Try getting a nice comfortor with golds and dark marroon or plum. You can find a nice placemat to use for your night stand. Pretty scarves on head board or windows. Keeping your room tidy is a huge thing. some throw pillows are fun and easy to make. Pick a color sceme and work with that.
Go to a craft store and get an artist frame, and cover it in fabric, or even a new shower curtain if that's all you can find. You might get some quilt batting for under the fabric. Now you have a piece of art to hang over the bricks, or a headboard in case your bed doesn't have one.
Maybe some mauve accessories. A throw rug. Is it a kid bedspread? Get one from your thrift store, or garage sales.
Firstly, I disagree with the adding posters idea. Kids generally have posters, adults generally have framed art of some kind. You can get inexpensive art work at yard sales, Walmart, or even do your own art of some kind or even photography of places you love!
We just overhauled my 16 year old daughter's room to make it more adult. One of the first things we did was weed out her CD and Book collection, getting rid of childish things. You could get mom's help and sell these things on e-bay or have a yard sale and get money for your room!
We rearranged her furniture and got RID (she saved them in the attic as she was attached to them) of her stuffed animals that were displayed as decorative items. Adults generally don't have stuffed animals in their rooms. They also promote allergies, so are great to get rid of!
I will be adding a plant, kids generally don't have plants and adults do. If you do have a plant, that means you have to take care of it and water it at least once a week, though!
I bought her an inexpensive file cabinet from Staples, it was only $49.00 and is really quite nice looking. I put it beside her computer desk and it matches (making it look more like an office or college dorm thing) and it fit all her DVDs and CDs in them, they are no longer in old shoe boxes and things like that all over the place. I got her a few nice wicker baskets vs. the plastic bins (that were pink and purple) her hair products were stored in. She has a basket for make up, one for nail products and one for hair items such as bruches, combs, elastics, etc.. She's been pretty good about keeping things organized in the last three weeks since her room make over. She's proud of it.
I also (you could save up babysitting money over time and do this) purchased three Rubbermade bins with covers for her closet. One has all her school/writing notebooks in it. She loves to write stories and they were all over the place. One is for her art and art supplies and sketchbooks and the other is music related. She plays flute and sings in chorus and acts in school plays and keeps ALL her music and scripts, it can get messy. All of the "clutter" that is now in the bins used to be all over her room so you could barely walk through it.
I'd be very careful painting over brick, once it's painted you have to live with it permanantly and brick is very desireable in homes. Some people just don't like to see it painted over top of and if your parents own the house, it could damage re-sale value or if they rent it, the landlord would be quite unhappy about this choice.
Why not enourage that nice, warm brick color into other areas of your room? You could try sewing (with mom's help?) some nice throw pillows to make your bed that is against the wall look more like a "day bed" and you could have a series of pillows with brick and other complimentary colors (stay away from little girl pink and violets) like deep blue (to bring in the colors of the pool outside!) , warm brown and beiges (to enhance the cream colored walls) that are along the wall side of the bed. You could throw a sleep over party and ask each friend to bring you something "grown up" or adult for your room to make it fun as well. Have pizza and watch a movie together and make your room a special place to have fun in and enjoy!
Best wishes and have fun!
