We are buying a home that has tile throughout except?

Question:in the master bath. It has horrible faux black marble peel and stick that is terribly done. I want to lay ceramic over it. I have peeled up tiles before, and it is a J-O-B! Can I lay plywood or backerboard over these tiles and go about my business? Or is there really no shortcuts? Any advice would be helpful!

Answers:
it sounds like the previous home owners removed old tiles and put in peel and stick as a quick fix I would definatly suggest getting the peel and stick off the floor just to make sure there isint something really ugly hiding under there and if your really looking to do a good job you might just tear out the subfloor and then you have a nice even fresh floor to lay tile on... and always use backerboard on floor tile instalation its not pretty what happens when you dont

You could install backerboard over the old tile if you make sure you secure it well to the subfloor. The only problem with doing this is if the old tile is hiding seroious imperfections in the surface. Would still probably work though.
