I need a kitchen theme. I like quotes and a recipe wall. How can I pull it all together?

Question:The walls are painted a deep mustard color and the trim is oriental red. Pretty contrasting, huh? Well, I really wanted to do a Paris cafe theme, but the hubby said no. So, I was considering a fat chef theme, but not so keen on it. I really would like to have quotes running above the cupboards and a recipe wall as a backsplash. I like the idea of themes, but what I really need is some decorating ideas, but no country, fruit, roosters, or tuscan.

To appease your husband, who seems nearly as color-phobic as mine is, you might consider just using a clear polyurethane (non-yellowing) to write the quotes on your walls. If you have semi-gloss paint, use a flat poly and the words will show up beautifully and look so cool. If your paint is an eggshell or satin, use a semi-gloss poly and it looks awesome.

You might consider just using black and white as your accent colors and making it a fun Caribbean theme with lots of fresh fruit in a bowl, a few colorful paintings/pictures on the walls from the islands, and light airy feeling with some sheers on the windows or plantation shutters. You could even get one of the nifty ceiling fans that looks like teak carved palm fronds. Lots of carved wooden bowls (which usually perks male ears...they love wood) and the room would be really unique and special to you, but also very warm and inviting.

gather random reciepes and make a collage do this on a cardboard or foam board and frame it..
or get one of a kind reciepes to go with your paris so only paris recipes have the real language and an english version frame it and have little frames around...
as for quotes that can be done with simple copy paper and MS word or what not...

I have a beach theme shells everywhere and a large fake shell i have a plant in.. the walls are blue ... then i got double sided tape and put photos of sunsets up above the cupboards.. looks nice
One might consider going to yard/ rummage sales and look for old recipe books. I myself have often made a collage of cards, etc.. like this. Paste these to a backing(cardboard) and install them in picture frames. This way one can very the between countries and styles of recipes, and if you get tired of it , it's easy to change.
With the strong yellow and red, you could have a Mexican theme going. Strings or pictures of chili peppers and pieces of mexican pottery. Maybe a cactus or two, if you don't have kids Everybody's tastes are so different here, so anyway, good luck with your project.
There's all kind of ideas on this site!

You could get the quotes from Wonderful Grafitti. They make up what you want (very reasonably priced) you pick the font, color, size and its a transfer so you just rub it onto the wall. You can get more info about them at their website.

Your backsplash recipe wall would have to be able to be wiped down. My first thought is to arrange your recipes on the wall with a good adhesive, and use a plexiglass to cover them and be the backsplash. I might intermingle pictures or drawings of items used in preparing food such as a whisk, wooden spoon, bowls, pots, etc. Maybe even have them overlap a top or bottom corner of a recipe that would call for that item.
The colors are great and you can go many directions with them.
It's good that you already have a headstart on your ideas.

As for the quotes, check out www.wallwords.com , there are many inspirational ideas there and you can customize your own stencils. Perhaps go with one good quote on recipes or cooking and make it a header above an area on one wall.

Under that area, consider piecing together cork tiles, you could even put a decorative moulding around the tiles and paint the moulding in the same oriental red trim. That way you can print up in a beautiful font your favorite recipes and change them out as frequently as you wish.

I'm including a link to one business that has good photos of various forms of cork, but i personally have never purchased from this vendor.
