What size central air conditioner needed for a 1400 sqft house?

Question:

Answers:
If only one furnace/central air handler, ton.

You are in luck.I bought a home about two years ago and soon after we moved in the air conditioner went out ....in august..in south alabama, talk about crappy luck! Anyway we had a 2 ton unit at the time and I called a friend of mine who has his own air conditioning business and he told me that as a general rule of thumb you need to have about 1 ton for every 500 square feet. Now my home is about 1400 square feet just like yours, but we went up to a 2 1/2 ton unit at the behest of my friend who informed me that it is not much different cost-wise and will be more effecient. In other words, it will cut on and off more often but will only run for a few minutes at a time. We have been extremeley pleased, he put in a Goodman unit which I had never heard of, but it must be a good one because it came with a 10 year warranty. Hope this helps you out!
You need to allow 500 sq. ft. of space per ton. So you would need a 3 ton unit. Just had one installed last summer in a 1200 sq. ft. house and it works great. As a maater of fact, we cannot even turn the thermostat past 74 or it will freeze us out. We are in central missouri and the heat can get well into the upper 90's, but we have hellatious humidity that makes it feel many times over 100 degrees. When we had a 2- 1/2 ton unit, we would keep the thermostat around 68-70 degrees and were plagued by high electric bills all summer! Get a 3 ton unit or even a 3 1/2 ton if you are thinking of adding on as we are.
