How can I decorate my 9x9, windowless bedroom?
Question:I'm moving into an apartment with a 9x9, windowless bedroom. It has a ceiling light fixture, but it emits very harsh lighting. I can paint it any color I want. I can also add any furniture I want (the only thing I have so far is my double bed mattress, which I'm definitely taking in with me). I'm looking for some ideas to expand the room while making it look as bright as possible. Thanks for your help!

Mirrors are your best bet. The multiply whatever they reflect. So hang as many mirrors as you can and put lamps in front of them where you can. That way the size of the room will appear larger and the light from the lamp will also be magnified making your room seem even brighter.
Paint the ceiling a light color than the walls and it will make the room seem larger...
OOOOO! How exciting! I'd paint it a light yellow collor (that ALWAYS brightens up tight spaces) and leave the ceiling white--that will make it look bigger. I I would also add some bright floral pictures (poster size) to a couple areas. This sort of gives the illusion of windows and breaks up the uniformity of the walls. Also, ditch the overhead lamp. I never use mine, they're way too harsh. Use a nice smaller lamp with a 60-70 watt bulb and a bright, cute shade on your night stand and then add another cute stand up lamp somewhere else in the room. If you're having a desk a small desklamp will do wonders for the room. Finally, white furniture helps make spaces seem more open and flowing...
Light, bright colors on the walls will help. Extra lighting like bedside lamps. Mirrors will be a great help. You can look for the ones that look like windows if that is your style; you could put a selection of various small mirrors on a wall which will reflect any light in the room as well as give you a decorative look; or just do a couple of large mirrors.
Paint it white or light yellow. hang big mirrors on the walls. keep it as empty as you can. Less clutter makes a room look bigger
Think carefully about the safety of a bedroom without windows. It is illegal in every U.S. jurisdiction I have ever worked in. Building codes, including the International Residential Code (IRC), require an openable window large enough for escape/rescue in case of fire or emergency. Also do you really want to live somewhere that you can't crack the window for fresh air? ever?
