What type of counter top would be more practical?
Question:I am purchasing my first home, it is a starter home (3bdrm,2bath). I would like to redo the kitchen in a style that is me. However, when we sale a few years down the line-it will be a starter home for the next person. I don't what type of counter top to choose that will not push the house out of a first-time homebuyer price range. I want it to look nice and still be afforable.
(I'll get my granite counter top when I build from the ground up)

In my starter home, I am tiling the countertops. Tile is only about $1.27 -$2/sqft at Lowes. Quick and easy. The only questionable thing are the edges. Bullnose tile are $2.00 for a 6 inch section. That adds up quickly. I may use a schulter aluminum transition (L shaped one) instead.

look on Ebay for 20% off Home Depot or Lowes coupons. They help a great deal. Lowes will take the HD coupons.

Granite or nothing. The price of one countertop is tiny in comparison to the cost of the entire house.
You can get nice laminates these days. Personally, I wouldn't spend money on anything other than granite. Solid surface and Corian tops can be very pricey as well, so if you're not looking to get granite, I would seriously suggest laminate.
Just don't get that old brown/yellow crap from the 70's...
Granit or Oak
corian is a good counter top to have in a starter home its more expensive then laminate and not as expensive as granite or silestone but it has alot of the same benefits and it wont be too over the top for a starter home... and if your looking for stylish cabinets that arent too over the top in price ikea is a pretty good deal i have even seen them used in high end remodels... so keep that in mind and good luck in whatever you choose
