Any advice on distressing?
Question:want to update to small pine chest of drawers,
Answers:
Sand it down and use a white or coloured paint wash over it for a subtle effect. Apply with a sponge for the best look.
Take out your aggression by hitting the chest with a heavy chain. It works well to create nicks in which your stain or paint will accumulate. I also use sandpaper around the edges, door handles or hardware and places like the tops of drawers that would bear the evidence of continual use. You don't say whether you are going to use stain or paint to achieve your finish, so I cannot give you any further tips.
As a furniture restorer, I suggest you don't do anything. I've repaired numerous pieces of furniture that have been damaged by people with belt sanders and the like to take part of this fad, only to be sent to me years later with them saying "I don't know why I did that. Can you fix it?"
If your chest of drawers is new, then distress using non destructive painting techniques; if anantique, I wouldn't do anything to it.
