Replacing Carpet?
Question:We need to replace the carpet in our house... 3 of the bedrooms are about 10'X10' and the living room is about 20'X40'. Since some of the rooms are so small I was thinking about getting carpet remnants...Has anyone ever gone the remnant route? Do you save money that way? Are there any drawbacks to using remnants? Any other advise would be very much appriciated!
Answers:
One of the large carpet places in my town has a whole building full of remnants. I've gone there a few times and was able to get a remnant large enough to do two bed rooms. They had multiples of the same style. So you just need to find a big store.
Your biggest drawback will be that you will have a hard time finding remnants that big (even 10 by 10) and I doubt you'll find one that is 20 x 40 at all. Also, they won't probably match and will cause your house to lack some continuity in design. If you intend to sell it during the life of this carpet, I think it would be a drawback for many sellers (it would be for me). It would be worth spending the extra money and getting a consistent look.
Another consideration is that (at least in the part of the country I live in - California) carpet is out and tile and wood floors are in, while using area rugs as needed. People, especially those with kids and pets, are tired of wall-to-wall carpet and are choose something more durable with area rugs that can be just tossed out when they get too old and dirty. We went that route in our remodel. Also people with allergies have had enough of carpets that you never quite keep clean. Something to consider.
I couldn't do it... I need all the carpet in my house to match...
