Cheap furniture?
Question:My boyfriend and I are moving to a new house together. We both had roommates of our own and lived seperately before. Now we are moving in together and we have NO furniture except a bed. Where can I find inexpensive furniture to put in my brand new house?
Answers:
There are many sources of inexpensive furniture if you spend the time and hunt them down. The second hand market is a gold mine. Check garage, estate and moving sales in the classified section of the newspaper. Look for zip codes in high income areas for the best quality. Check thrift stores in those areas as well. Consignment stores are another great source because they only take furniture that is name brand and in good condition. Craigslist and freecycle can also be a great resource. Liquidation sales at furniture stores going out of business net good finds, too. Ikea, of course, is another resource for starter furniture and it is inexpensive, stylish and clean lined, but you have to put some of it together yourself. Unfinished furniture stores have un-upholstered pieces that you can either paint, stain or seal yourself and are cheaper as a result.
garage sales, Ikea Caelog. Be careful though because cheap furniture isnt always a good idea. they fall apart so much quicker and sometimes (especially couches) will last a year max! The wood is so thin and will snap easily.
Try Craigslist in your city, craigslist your city.com and freecycle.org
My daughter recently moved into an apartment and went thru the same thing. We scoured Goodwill & Salvation Army stores & found wonderful items - maple kitchen table & chairs, end tables for livingroom, dishes, entertainment center, a TV, computer desk, coatrack - it was really VERY worth it! We cleaned everything and it looks great - she spent only about $150.
