What am I going to need for my dorm room at college?

Question:I'm trying to decide what to get for my dorm room and how to decorate it... Any advice, or tips, or necessities? My mom is already letting me bring a minifridge we have and a currently unused microwave, and I have a couple posters, but otherwise I'm stumped as to what I'm gonna need!!

Answers:
Lots of stuff, but you probably won't have much room.

Sheets, bedding
shower stuff, including basket to carry shampoo, etc
don't forget shower shoes
bathrobe-walking to the bathroom
erase board to put on the outside of your door, erase pen/eraser
computer, printer, music, tv, regular school & desk supplies
stationery, stamps
normal stuff you have in your room to get ready (blowdryer, straightener, toiletries including tampons/pads)
cell phone
snacks, water
photos
full-length mirror
a good pillow or two
If you can, call your roommate and co-ordinate colors.
Fabric & ribbon that matches your room to cover your bulletin board (make sure there is one in your room)
Maybe bring a safe for your closet. Seems like things get stolen a lot. Then you can have a diary to document the best time of your life. Have lots of fun!!

One of my daugher's friends got a housekeeper. If you are neat you should not need one. The rooms are normally not that big. You will need cleaning supplies and laundry soap, etc. Lots and lots of quarters

But be prepared to get homesick the first week. My daughter was so excited to go. But the night before I was to return home she was crying and throwing-up in the parking lot. She was very scared. Now she says it has been the best year of her life.

Ask your mom if she is going to send you cookies or flowers the first week. I sent my daughter something everyday her first week and it made it easier for her. She will also need lots of cards and stamps too.

Check and see if there is anything your will need nails/hammer/screws/screwdrive... We had to go buy them when we got there.

also a little toaster oven. That along with your fridge and micro are very handy.
sheets, towels, comforter. pillow.
Lots of HANGERS> A variety of clothing,
A desk orgainizer, a phone, if you are going to get a landline.
Your computer, a desk lamp, all your bath stuff, If your in a suite you may share a bathroom w/ 3 other girls. Or a whole hall full. So a basket to carry your bath stuff.
Talk to your roommate if you are going to have one and find out what she has and is willing to bring. So you don't have dupes of things.

Check with your college as to what you are allowed to have in your room. Most colleges don't allow microwaves or hot plates. They usually allow fridges though. My daughter is going to college this fall too. She also lived at her high school in a dorm all 4 years. Mostly decorate it to feel as much like home as possible. You will be lonely for your family and friends, even if you think you won't. Colors, styles, and pictures of fun times with your friends and family will help to make home closer. You will "need" space to organize your books and your clothes. Dorm rooms are generally "smallish" and if you have a room mate(which you probably will) you will also need to accommodate her stuff and her style. If possible contact your prospective room mate and get to know her a little better before you move in together. Then maybe you can get a better idea of what she is like and her style and what she is bringing. Then you may be able to compromise with you bringing some stuff and her bringing other stuff. You really won't need two fridges. Good luck from someone who's been there!
hmm...

I recommend having your roomate bring as much stuff as possible... the more your roomate brings the less you have to carry back and forth and worry about breaking!

A lot depends if you have a meal plan and how good it is.

If you have unlimited you probably wont be doing much cooking.

Oh a futon might be nice.. that doubles as an extra bed or a place for your friends to sit.

Also a tv, computer... internet cables, lamp.

They really dont fit that much in those little rooms. So the less you bring the better!
When your college sends you a list of your roommates, if you are having them, the best thing to do is meet with them ahead of time to get an idea of each person's style. The next thing you need to do is get a list of approved items. Most colleges won't allow candles, toaster ovens, and some are strict on the type of microwave you use. Basically anything that can start a fire is not allowed. When I stayed in my dorm for college I made it a point to make my area as comfortable as possible. I had three roommates in a 15 x 9 room.incredibly cramped. I would start with all the essentials, and go from there, especially if you are close to home. But that also goes with meeting your roommates. If you have a bunk bed, one thing I did, while staying on the top bunk, was taking a curtain rod, and I made a curtain out of cool fabric I bought that was big enough to go to the edge of my bed from top to bottom, and that gave me a lot of privacy. It helps make you feel like you aren't jammed into a room either because it give you space, and if you dont' want to see your roommates you just close the curtain. Good Luck!

List of Essentials

Sheets, Bedding, Pillow(s) Alarm Clock, Bathroom Essentials, Hangers, Laundry Basket, Storage containers! (tiered ones work best if you have to share a closet) Push Pins, Dry Erase Board, Dry Erase Markers, Office Supplies, desk organizers, plastic or paper plates, napkins, silverware (you will have no idea how valuable this will be...lol) cleaning products, trash cans the list goes on and on.
First Aid Kit - for all those wild parties and the after-effects! Also, brush up on self-defense.
I changed my room many times... don't panic and don't overthink it...!
buy everything you need one at a time... don't get anything not reaaly useful for you, it will creat clutter, your space will be less attractive, and it'll be that much harder to move again if u had to...
when you decorate choose things you love, go simple and not too expensive cos these thing will not last 4ever... and always keep your room organized and with enough space for traffic... use double duty stuff... be creative!
Good luck.
