How can I create a dark wood/stain looking faux finish?
Question:I have a pair of old painted french doors that I would love to stain but don't want to go thru the trouble of stripping off the existing paint. Can gel stain be applied over paint? Does anyone know of a faux finish that will have a dark wood stain appearance? I think that is my only bet.

I think it might answer a lot of your questions!
You won't be able to use the gel stain over the paint. What you could do is paint a lighter wood color. Then buy a darker wood color(or vise versa) and then use a wood graining tool to make the design. If you practice with that tool its crazy how real it looks. You can find this tool at Lowe's for sure and probably other home improvement stores. Good luck!
I bought a new steel door that was primed. I just painted it yellow, and then used gel stain with a graining tool. It looks just like oak. The only tricky part is to do it the way the carpenter would have made the door. Stiles, rails, etc. Use masking tape and go for it. If you can't figure it out, just look at a panel door in your house.
