Lowes and HD have compound in small quantities that will probably work well for you. You can get it premixed if you don`t mind waiting for it to set to sand or you can get dry that you mix that sets as fast as 5 minutes. All you need to know is how to mix and apply it.
depending on how big the hole or tear is tooht paste works good to cover it up.
Get something to repair it at Home Depot, Ace, etc. The repair won't show up and can be painted to match the rest of the wall. It's easy. Do not use toothpaste... I can't believe that it was suggested.
