Small Remodeling Project?

Question:I would like to take a window out and put in an outside entry door. At the same time put the window where the original door was. In other words, our back door leaves the side of the kitchen and the window is in the dining room. The openings are the same width. The only problem would be enlarging one opening and closing the other one down. Hopes this makes sense. I am reasonably competent with tools, but not real experienced in remodeling. Looks to me it could be tricky getting the window out in one piece.

Answers:
getting the window out shouldn't be tricky.

The problem is going to be enlarging and enclosing openings. You'll most likely have to take down siding outside and drywall inside - enough of it to rework the framing.

And you should know the local codes on how large a header you need. You might be able to carefully remove the window support structure and swap it with the door structure, or you might be required to bring it up to code if it isn't already.

You also might run into wiring and plumbing.

You'll need more knowledge than how to swing a hammer for the project.
