I removed tiles off bathroom wall. I have a 1'' gap between the wall.?

Question:Can I just tape and mud the gap. Also, can I use a sander and smooth out the mastic that is still on the walls. I want to do the wall in bead board (wainscot), do I have to totally remove the toilet and sink in order to do it? Sorry that this is a 3- part question, I can use the help and apprieciate your positive responsed.

Mary,
I am guessing when you say a 1" gap you mean between the two pieces of drywall??

First things first take out the toilet... this will give you so much more working room. Make sure to put a toilet paper wad in the toilet flange(the hole in the floor) to stop any odor from escaping. If the sink is a vanity type and not a pedestal style you can leave it in. Otherwise pull that too.

Second you certainly can use a sander to knock down any built up mastic from the tile. It might take a while with a sander you might want to try a scraper on the tough spots

And third... a one inch gap will take forever to dry with drywall mud my suggestion would be to get a scrap piece of drywall and cut it down to fit in the gap. Screw it in and then tape and mud

good luck hope this helps
