Hand held ceramic tile cutters. are the any good?
Question:i`ve got some ceramic wall tiles to fit around my window, are these cutters any good or is there a better one to buy, i dont want to buy an exphensive one as iam only going to use it for this one job & only cutting/replacing 20 tiles.thanks
Answers:
One of those cutters where you slide the cutter over the tile will do you fine.like a board with 2 bars over it. The edges will not be perfect, bu invariably these edges will be against say, windowsill, or wall, or in a tight corner so dont matter. Better to buy a 'guided' type of cutter, not those little hand held scribes.
have a look..

Some tile places check the cutter out but the hand held one will make shapes and do not break the tile perfect.
The hand held ones are fine, in the right hands :-) If someone is all thumbs, then few tools will seem ok. I used hand held tile cutters for many years and got perfect results, but when the more modern cutters appeared with a base plate and sliding cutter, they did make life easier on the hands and wrists. You can get satisfactory results with either but I would probably plump for the later type, base plate and sliding cutter, simply because it;ll last you a lifetime, and is slightly easier. If at some later date you have a bigger tiling job, you'll be better off with that type.
NO. Hand cutters leave a lot a "flash" (little remnants of the cut) on the tile also you'll break alot of the pieces before getting the hang of it. You can rent a wet saw, buy a cheap one for about 50bucks or mark your cuts and take them to lowes to cut them for 50 cents per cut
