I need a recipe for whitewashing exterior brick..?
Question:I would like to whitewash the exterior of my brick home to get that old cottage look. I have heard that lime is used but am concerned about killing my yard around the house with the lime. Is there an alternative to lime? If not, what is the best way to achieve this look?

White wash is good stuff. use 25lb. hydrated lime 5lb, salt mix with water to form thin paste let this mixture set over night and use the next day,add more water if necessary. Will not harm grass or plants this mixture will rid you of ants if you have that problem. Apply with stiff brush
i've not used strait lime.. in doing so u jst need to protect everything around u regardless if u use lime or paint.
How about trying white paint w/ water or white paint w/ glaze? I would use outdoor paint but try a place that wouldn't b seen mch & c how it works & weathers.
I tried contruction mud on my brick (block brick) on my back wall & painted it 2 c how it would work over the mos w/ rain( which isn't mch) & sun (esp) & wind etc.. it's held up really well. I've seen them do wash on brick inside w/ glaze & paint so it should work on the outside. Glaze has more of a varnish like substance when finished so mayb i would go w/ that for more protection.
but try both. Have fun... (ps..let me know how it works.. I have a friend that wants to try that)
