How to apply decals to melamine plates?

Question:I would like to know how to apply decals to melamine plates but be able to use them everyday. NOT china-- melamine!!
Are decals applied using water? heat? or both?? Does anyone know the application process for this?? I want to be able to eat off the plates and they must be washable. Not worried about dishwasher safe or microwave safe. I want to make my own for picnics or camping.

I don't think you can. The only way I know of is to use clear plates, and put the decals on the bottom so they can be seen through the plate. That way the food never touches them, and knives and forks don't damage them. I have seen some absolutely beautiful decoupaged ones, too. Just coat with a couple coats of ModPodge. ON THE UNDERSIDE
