4 home improvement projects within next 4yrs?

Question:1st: need new siding on house,2nd: need updated windows--which of these 2 should be done first?
3rd: basement- should I get someone that a friend recommends, or someone from yellow pages??
4th: would like a front porch with an over hang- husband says why- all you see is the street: build a small deck off of back steps(change the steps and the wall can bring out 3 feet) which of 3 and 4 to do??
thanks for any advice.

Answers:
Do the windows first, because the new siding should go over the nail strip of the window. If you do the siding first, once windows are installed, you may need to repair the new siding. If the friend had work done and found the work to be acceptable, have them give you a bid for the basement. You should also get a couple more bids from others, and compare them. While a front porch is a nice addition, I rhink you .would get more enjoyment from a back deck. Good luck.

Windows 1st, then siding. Siding usually butts up to windows or is inserted into channels in the windows depending on the type.
Does the recommended person have any credentials or is he just a nice guy. I'm a nice guy but I wouldn't attempt brain surgery.
Overhangs serve another purpose besides having a dry/shaded place to sit. They also keep the rain away from the edge of the house(you should have gutters as well)
And that helps keep your newly remodeled basement dry.
Do windows first. The updated windows will not only look better, but it'll save you money on heating and cooling. It'll be easier to do the siding after they are done.

The basement- get someone that a friend recommends. Not only have they seen their work you'll probably save money.

The over hang over the front door is nice. It'll helpout when it's raining or snowing. But having a deck out back is the way to go. You'll most likely use the deck if it's out back where you have some privacy. Out front it's just for curb appeal.

As far as which you should do first? It depends on what you can afford really. Are you planning to sell in the near future? I'd try to do the windows first. It'll save you money on your heating and cooling. The basement I'd do last unless you need the living space.
Replace the windows before you get the siding done. Otherwise, the new windows and siding may not match up right and leave areas that need more attention later.

For the basement, a recommendation is usually better than a Yellow Pages ad. Did this guy do some work for your friend? How does it look? Was the final bill close to the original estimate? Whoever you choose for a contractor, for ANY work, check references.

Porches and decks are both nice to have. Get some estimates for both. Decide which project best fits your budget and lifestyle.
