Is it possible/wise to cut through exterior brick walls of a house if you want to add in a door?
Question:I'm thinking about those big blocks they built houses out of in the 1970's, not little 'red brick wall' bricks...
Answers:
Sure ,we do a couple a month. Make sure you do all the prep. (cover EVERYTHING)
Get someone competent to do your layout.
Hope you have a big burly friend to operate the saw (The overhead cuts are a real strain)
If you want a door there. You have to go through it. Yes you can go through a door.
yup
As long as framing for the new opening is built to carry the load, you're OK.
A block wall is relatively easy to cut in a new opening.
Not out of reach of as a DIY project w/ a little home center research. for rental tools & materials.
A good home improvement contractor should be able to finish up inside & out in a couple of days.
Best regards
You have to be careful of where you wish to go--some walls are considered "shear" walls and they CANNOT be fenestrated. Other exterior walls carry the electrical and water/waste lines into a house--also a very big nono to pierce. The city you live in may also have codes that deal very explicitly with exterior fenestrations (doors/windows). You may have to consult a framer if you can not access your house's blueprints. Also, be sure you frame the door correctly because exterior wall are generally considered weight bearing walls and you wouldn't want the roof/second floor to sag or fall.
Yes but get a builder to do an inspection first because it does depend on a number of 'support' factors.
