How do you restore 1939 octagonal tile?

Question:I live in a 1939 home, and we are remodeling our bathroom. We want to keep the original floors, but after decades of wear, the black-white octagonal tile is are very dull and dirty (including the grout) -- despite continued scrubbing. There are also a few chips. Is anyone aware of techniques that we should consider for bringing the tile back to life so that it looks just as good as the rest of the bathroom? I am hoping that there is an equivalent process for tile as there is for hardwood floors (e.g., sand them and re-finish them).

Answers:
I don't think there is any way to fix them back to the way they looked when first put down. It sounds like the glaze etc. is all worn off and the grout is in bad shape and dirty. They do make new ceramic tiles they do look like the old type white and black bathroom floors, go to a tile store and check it out, they may be able to help you, Good luck
