I need some decorating advice! thanks?
Question:Here is some pictures...please let me know what you think i should do. i like modern/transitional style! let me know what you think ...thank you so much!
Answers:
ok you asked me and you know I will be honest. Here is what I would do.if at all possible.
1. draw up a floor plan for placement of furniture as the following. DO NOT make an L shape in the small space which helps block your door leading outside.
OK.now place each sofa piece facing each other facing towards the center of the room. Place the table in the center to use for both sofas.
The sides of the sofa's can be closer to the wall to allow for a walking path to the door and entering/exiting the room. Place a tall standing light in the corner behind the sofa where the window is, then place the sofa in front of it.
The 1 sofa's back should be in the middle which is seperating the dining room from the living area. NOW.rule of thumb is...you only need 18 inches between pieces of furniture to allow enough traffic flow between pieces you are using to seat people.
So face the furniture, snug it in there to make a cozy feeling. You want to invite people to converse, not run them away by straining their necks! A big area rug is a nice way to section off spaces to. Place under tables to protect the floor where heavy traffic is.
2. I would get myself a smaller dining table that has folding leaves on each side that can be extended when company comes over, then placed back against the wall when not in use as a nice coffee nook area to read the paper, etc. Try finding 2 different sitting chairs to add flair. They need not match, you just have to like them!
3. Try to find a big mirror or an old window with panes and have a mirror mounted on the back for reflection of the lighting. Hang it almost to the top of the table edge or centered the wall where your table sits. Mirrored tiles glued on the wall and framed is fun too. Keep it in scale with every thing else around it.
When you add this, it will allow you to permit more lighting to enter your rooms in a small space, it will also permit you to reflect the items you sit around for decoration in your living room, and kitchen that makes your space look much bigger and fancier since it looks like you have twice the items!
Additionally, it gives you permission to enjoy a view that otherwise you would have to turn around and look out the window or door to see.
4. Task lighting is important. If you can sit a couple of small lamps around in front of the mirror or other items that reflect, it will not cost as much to light the rooms since they will bounce the light around.
You could always just use an inexpensive short plaster decorative column from Wal Mart to sit your table lamp on or even a silk plant on to make an impact. (look in the silk plant isles)
Just buy a small round piece of glass to fit on the top of the column and you have made another instant classy table for nothing to add interest. Use some tacky puddy to adhere the glass to keep from falling off the column.
5. Leather is nice but should always be enhanced with a slight color scheme like a throw coverlet or a couple of hand decorated pillows for extra comfort and a splash of drama to any room. BEFORE you get a pillow, or cover to throw. choose your art work for the walls. Pick out colors that are in the picture to mimic on the pillows for the sofas.
6. The small the room, the smaller in scale the furniture should be to make it feel right. But adding a couple of tricks of the trade, it can fool the eye to not noticing it as much just by meerly placement of the items.
You have my email address, (dekedo1@yahoo.com) send me some more pics after you are done so that I can help you critique the space to make it YOU!
The windows need to be lightened up some. Try maybe some bamboo shading or something earthy to enhncance the male dominence in the room and the dark leather.
A JC Penny home store will have anything you desire. They will give you a free measuring estimate... you don't have to buy, but you know what you are to need anyway. Lowes too.
Ask for a reddish color that is close to a holly berry red. It dries darker on your walls than it looks in the can. Paint 1 wall of choice a red to make the space pop if you have permission to.
The wall with the arch would be sexy that color...make sure it is not a RED, red, you want it more of an orangy red like a holly berry. Olive greens, pinks, yellows, browns, purples go with that color.
Make your art work splash all over the walls! Stong contemporary bold markings and colors of figures, etc. would make a big impact all around. You should always have at least 1 red item in a room and something black.always!!
I have it in 3 places throughout my home and it is the talk of the town. People love it & the way it is decorated.
I promise...you won't be sorry.
Small kitchen, don't clutter. Small items for small space to make it functional.toaster, coffee maker, maybe a flower arragement or a silk planter like a FICUS tree ( pronounced FI-cuss) to accent the wall by your table will be attractive and enough. Thanks for asking. Donna D
First, start with the windows. I would suggest that you put up a decorative rod about 2-3 inches above the window and have it extend the sides of the windows by 2 or 3 inches as well. Have soft suede-like floor length drapes in a light gold color (available at Bed. Bath, and Beyond). You need artwork behind the couch or possibly a large nicely framed mirror, check these out, I like the multi-colored mosaique: http://www.pier1.com/catalog/collections... The glass vase should go and be exchanged with the textured ceramic vace seen here: http://www.pier1.com/catalog/search.aspx...
Now, onto the dining area. Is that a counter heigth table and chair set? If so, place it against the wall with two chairs on each side. You can hang a collection of 4 prints, 2 on top, 2 underneath or 3 prints side by side using a co-hesive theme like trees, fruit, flowers, wine, whatever your taste. get four place mats for the table in a color, perhaps multi-colored to complement the color of your drapes. And now the kitchen, a few nice baskets would look good above the cabinets. Also, splurge on a decorative wrought iron wine bottle holder to put your wine in. The plant holder on the wall is a little dark although I do like the plant, bamboo?
You have a nice looking place, just needs a few accents.
