They r the same thing, jst different parts of the country call it one or the other. Like pop or soda referring to a can of Pepsi... Like a submarine sandwich, Hoagie, Poor Boy, Sub, etc... different parts of the country.
I think it is derivitives of the same thing in different languages...since furniture comes from all over the world and different eras in history. There may be subtle differences in details such as arm style, back height, attached cushions, etc. based on the historical period and country that originally started that idea. Sorry I don't have those details for you. It is all common terminology for the same thing: an elongated chair that seats more than one person.
And different places in the US are probably used to calling this thing a certain word but as usual we may not know what we are really talking about based on the historical facts.
