Powder paint - what is it and how does it work?

Question:i know its paint but what causes it to dry/set etc and what's it like? And can it be used as a DIY material or is it more for children who are artistic?!

thanks

Answers:
It is a fine dry powder. It is mixed with water to achieve consistency required. Once mixed it can dry out into a hard set block. It is not a DIY material.

It is used by children or adults and in art therapy to achieve an artistic expression. Usually a picture or painting on paper.

It may contain white cement (Portland cement that is white), and hence it will set after it is mixed with water. Alternatively, it may be made with gypsum which will set upon mixing with water too.

Do not add too much water to the powder than stated, if not, the integrity of the coat, the color and other properties will be compromised.

In countries with extreme cold weather, powder paint has a easier storage than emulsion paint - which will freeze in low temperature. Powder paint is also free from harmful solvent found in emulsion paint, and even most water-based types!

The downside is its colour consistency since the worker may have added different amount of water, and the dispersion of its color pigments are normally are less than ideal.

They are both DIY material and for artistic work.
On the other hand, if you are asking about powder coating paint...that is something that needs to be left to professionals.

The "paint" is applied in a powder form. Often electrostatically; the item being painted and the applicator are charged with electricity in such a way that the powder is attracted to the metal in a very uniform layer. The "paint" is made of enamel.

Once the item is coated it is baked in a special oven at high temperatures until the enamel melts and attaches itself firmly to the item being painted. When cooled it makes a very durable surface that will last much longer than "wet painting" with ordinary spray on paint.
