Do you really need warranty or protection plan for your furniture?
Question:I am getting ready to buy new furniture and i have been window shopping for my house and everyone seems to offer me this deal.
Answers:
As a general rule these warranties are just a waste of money. The sale of the warranty gives the furniture saleperson an extra bonus or commision. As much as 25% of the warranty goes to the sales person, The normal amount is 15% of the warranty. The add on warranties are a major money maker for the store., Yes, sometimes the warranties save the buyer, but most of the time its just a waste.
I would. Oh ya I did!
I then sat on my new 1700 dollar couch and I had a little teeny screwdriver in my pocket..DOOH!
It poke through the fabric. but the warranty covered all but torn threads. so the poke was repaired by the company replacing the unit. Good deal. I now get a full search before I sit... :-)
I'll add to make sure YOU read what is covered, the salesman may not be correct then to find out is isn't covers for ink stains would not be good.
Depends on replacement cost versus coverage cost. $150 to cover a $300 chair for a year doesn't seem too worthwhile. What does it cover? If you have kids, and it protects the fabric, sounds good. If it only covers the structure, say springs, and no one will be jumping on it, probably not. Like any insurance, its a bet. They're betting you won't need it, you're betting you will. Who has the better odds. Its just not a yes or no question. If you can afford it, you're probably better off.
If you have kids, live in a flood prone area or any other natural disater area, it might be good. just last yesterday people in queens NY, and New Jersey had their furnoture destroyed after a freak flooding. on the other hand, if you pay this for 5 years without making a claim, you would have paid enough for another piece of the same furniture.
I had it on a furniture set. It was worth the extra money! I have a dog and two kids, so my furniture would get stained. They would replace pieces and cushions if they couldn't get the stains out.
My suggestion however? Do some research. Make sure the furniture chain/company you are buying from has good reviews from the BBB. I bought one set of furniture years ago, purchased the warranty plan and didn't realize the company had MANY complaints against them. Getting furniture replaced by the company was a NIGHTMARE. I just bought new furniture recently, did the research, and I'm very happy!
