1972 Split Level---How to Make An Architecturally Pleasing Front?

Question:I've been thinking to just change the roof lines to double hipped, is this expensive (it needs to be re-roofed anyway)?

oh please tell me what you find out. I have a split level build in 1975. Its a two story on the left side, the right side is 1 story. It was a Colonial revival, and when it was first built it had a Mansard roof(where the second story on the left side was "roofed" all the way down to the first story) We changed that but the front door has no overhang or feature. Its just the door stuck in the middle of the front of the house.
