In my bedroom I stick with a sage green color and off white (the lightest beige color). Because you probably don't want to go through the trouble of repainting the walls, I would hang up paintings in similar colors using those plastic hooks that you can stick to the walls instead of nails. All of the stuff that I bought was from Target, cute but reasonable price. As for the living room I went with dark red drapes and white see through panels with decorations of red roses on them. Those panels were purchased at Ikea in the kids department so they were less expensive! Any accents in the room were black, like the drapery rod for example. Wrought iron look. A nice plain bookshelf also purchased from Ikea with all my books, photos in frames, candles, etc. on the shelves. A dark red runner on the coffee table. A plain white sofa with a colored throw... there are so many possiblilites! Color is the trick when everything else is plain. Ikea and Target are the best places to find cute stuff. Good luck!
Maybe some painings or posters that remind you of home, maybe get an area rug to cover up some of the plain carpet, some drapes could add some flair to your windows. Just make it personal, there are alot of things you can do to change a place that isn't permanant.
Plants and area rugs are essential. Target and WalMart have a nice selection of rugs for under $200. I would also recommend overstock.com. That is one of my favorites. Another thing that I use often are table scarves. You can use decorative napkins by ironing them and placing them on coffee tables, end tables, and dressers. They usually only cost $3 each. Adding color in a few places by painting dressers and entertainment centers will make everything feel more personal. I hope that your decorating goes well!!
Plants, pretty window shades, pretty lights fixtures or cool looking hanging lamps. Ebay, Ikea or local discount shops.
Get a focal point, whether it be a clock, picture or lamp and build off that. Have fun!
www.bksgiftsnmore.com is a great site for not only ideas but the products too, plus I think they give you a free $10 gift card to get you started!
