Painting a lt cream dresser white...need help?

Question:I have a dresser that is a very light cream color. However, my daughter's bed is a bright white, and I would like to repaint the dresser. Since there isn't much color difference, do I have to strip all the cream color off? It has some minor chips in the pain at the very bottom (32 year old Broyhill dresser), but other than that the pain is in great shape - just the wrong color.

Also, what type of paint should I use? (I'm by myself, and the dresser is upstairs, so I can't take it outside to sand or paint -- needs to be done inside.)

Answers:
Most likely no problem here. Lightly sand the finish so the new coat can stick. Using a damp cloth or tack cloth be sure to remove all the loose sanded material.

Put on a sealer, they are often tinted white. When dry, paint it the white you want. With the cream color and sealer you may only need one coat. See how it goes. A gallon of paint is priced close to a quart, so get a gallon. Water base paint will be okay, purchase a good water base brush (2-3" wide).

There are a lot of "whites" so visit the store and pick up sample swatches of white and compare them to the bed. Remove the drawer handles if needed. I don't believe you will have any problem. Remember to drop cloth the floor. Good luck.

if you aren't really concerned with there being a little indention where the chip is i would just paint straight over it. Just make sure the surface is clean. I usually use Sherwin Williams or just go into your local hardware store and tell them what your project is and they'll direct you to some kind of glossy latex paint i'm sure.
You should lightly sand the surface with 350 grit sandpaper or sanding sponge. Then use tack cloth to get rid of the remaining particles. After that you will need to PRIME the surface with Zinsser/Bin/1-2-3 Primer which you can find at Lowe's and other home improvement stores. Then you can apply your paint-make sure it is a satin or semigloss finish. American Tradition/Valspar has a good furniture paint that you can buy in a quart which is most likely all you will need. Make sure when possible you use small foam rollers so you get a nice clean profession look. Good luck!
