I knew a very good builder in south london that really provided an excellent service, the workers were not allowed to smoke or swear and started work at 7.30am!

I personally would always go with ones that come recommended. It's the only way to be sure (unless of course you are going to take off an nuke them all from orbit).

look in the yellow pages and ring around get quotes don't go fot the cheapest one or the most expensive, the middle man would be better.
Also ask for references a few, find out how long they have been trading.
Don't always go by trade associations, because alot of them are not worth the paper they are written on. Most builder just get into them for a stick to put on there van.
Finally if they can start work asap then they can't be very good.
Good builders are usually very busy, always in demand.

I have employed good builders in the past and currently find them through word of mouth, they turn out to be the best. Also whenever you see a job being done for someone else and it looks good ask them there and then for their card or details and you will be a winner!
