How do I sew a curved hem without wrinkling?
Question:I'm trying to hem a curved piece of cloth, but when I try to fold and pin, it won't lay flat. How can I fix this? I'm not using a pattern, so I don't have any instructions.
Answers:
Don't fold and pin.
Lay the two pieces ( garment and facing) right side together. Stitch your line with a close (small) stitch. Clip from the edge to the stitch line -- the closer the clips are to each other, the easier the turn. After clipping the entire curve, trim the seam line to 1/4 inch. Open the seam line and using a pressing ham, GENTLY steam the sewing line-- then fold to the back. Finger press the seam line to itself.
If this method doesn't give you the look you want-- top stitch using a zipper foot as close to the edge as you can.
How about a rolled hem like a hanky!
good luck
I am not sure how to explain this so I hope you can understand it. You need to cut small triangular shaped pieces into the fabric where it curves. Cut it just to where you want to hem it. The top of the triangle (the point) should touch the stitched part of the hem. Maybe two or three of these little notches should do they should be about center of the curve. Test it on a piece of material first to be sure you are doing it correctly. Hope you can figure it out.
I think it might help if you cut the cloth into a curved shape before trying to pin and sew the hem.
You need to make a very narrow hem to decrease the width difference in the fabric. Stitch it by hand and gently ease the extra fullness into place as you sew. You may have a bit of wrinkling on the underside but the outer side that shows should be smooth.
