I'm remodeling my bathroom. Need help, pleas.?
Question:The previous owner glued frameless mirrors to the wall. How can I get them off without breaking the glass?
Answers:
Buy some craft wire, or thin (but strong) rope, and gently slide it behind the mirror, be patient, it may take a little time and effort to do it without damaging the mirror... and the wall. Obviously the glue will probably leave a residue. If you plan on painting you can just sand down and spackle the wall where it is uneven. Or you can get a wallpaper removal spray... it's not just for wallpaper, it weakens glue and it will be easier to get off. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, I would call a professional to do it so you don't damage your house.
If you don't have an answer by the time by honey gets home.. I will ask him & post it here... he will know, he does this type of stuff for a living
Breaking it (actually, having a glass professional do it) is probably the best way.
Slide a wire down behind the glass and cut the glue. Great care should be taken.
honestly breaking the mirror will probably save you from damaging the wall severely so its basically a loose loose situation if its a matter of superstition trust me I think you will be fine and if your trying to save the mirror the glue will ruin it most likely anyway you cant get the glue off without taking off the reflective mirror backing...
First, tape across the mirror just in case it breaks,
Then, (wearing gloves) take piano wire and saw back and forth gently behind the mirror with the wire (like flossing your teeth).
It's difficult to keep mirrors from breaking no matter how careful you are. Be sure to wear shoes and protective gear...and you may want to tape newspaper across the mirrors in case they do break.
If the mirrors are large and cumbersome, it might be worth it to hire someone or at least enlist a friend to help.
Good luck! (and be careful!)
It really depends on the adhesive they used to put it on the wall. You may be out of luck, and either break the mirror or rip the drywall off with the mirror.
If your really desperate try pouring some "goof off" behind the mirror and see if that helps loosen the adhesive.
If that doesn't work and this mirror was put up more than 10 yrs ago, try heating up the mirror with a hair dryer. Make sure the goof off is dried off though (its flammable). Use a large, flat bladed object, like a drywall or putty knife and start working it in between the wall and mirror.
Good luck!
