What colors?
Question:ok so i have a spacious living room. it has off white walls, wood trim, grey carpet, (booring) and we have a big circular sectional that is a rich red, faux suede couch. We also have na ugly burgandy fireplace that has some weird paint effect.. Anyway i think we should paint the room. im 15 and first, i need to convince my dad to let us paint. we're also thinking about selling our house and i think if we give the living room some life and character then it'll be more appealing. Right now, it seems a little cold and very boring! Basically my questions are: how do i convince my dad to let us paint? (my mom wants to paint as well) AND what color would work with the red couch and still be apealing to buyers(no bright colors, more neutral tones)?

Hello. In decor today the best colour to paint your walls is cream or off-white. If you think about it,people are going to be put off by heavy colours, which dominate and make room smaller. With red, you have got the prime contrasts- Black and White. You also have contrasts which are- Pale green, lime green, aubergine, not so much what you don't want, but what you do like. How to use- scatter cushions, ornaments, glass ,curtains etc. It is a good idea to move the couch around(if you can). See where it looks best. Stand at doorway and look in. Imagine you are someone looking into room for first time. What looks eye-catching to you?Would a print on the wall, echoing the colours in the cushions-help. Maybe a Mirror.Make your Dad proud of you.Good luck!
If you are going to sell your house don't paint the walls, unless they need it to clean the room up and you do them in a beige or neutral color. Bring life and color to your room with bright accent pillows and curtains and throws. You may turn a potential buyer off who doesn't like wild colors or doesn't see their furniture fitting in with a wildly colored room. You would be surprised how much a room will come to life with a nice bright area rug and purple and yellow throw pillows on the couch, and curtains with a pretty bold pattern. All this stuff will go with you when you move.
to appeal to buyers, you have to stay neutral and get rid of the big red couch.. sorry.. but if buyers can't see themselves sitting in it, then it's a turn off...
Depending on the color of the "red' on the couch, I would by some earth tone (maybe multi-colored) throw pillows and maybe a throw to of set the pillows with the red in the couch, I would also us some foliage (plants) to make it fill a little more cozy.
If you're going to move, I would recommend leaving the walls the same color or painting them in a nuetral tone, like cream.
Have you considered replacing the grey carpet instead? Perhaps a beige colored carpet would look more appealing.
But if you also plan to paint the walls, make that you don't put in a new carpet that is the same color. For example, if you're going to paint the walls a cream color, pick out a carpet (maybe a beige color) that is a little darker than the wall color.
I also recommend adding an area rug to add more color to the room. Make sure that the rug has at least some red in it to match the couch.
If the fireplace is ugly, then it would probably help to paint it. Otherwise, potential home buyers might look at it and think to themselves, "Do I have the time or money to fix that fireplace?" Home buyers are looking for homes that need as little work as possible. Having a nicer looking fireplace will most likely give people a better impression of the living room.
