Pet friendly upholstery?
Question:I need to re-upholster my couch and love seat. Does anyone know a good strong material. It will be impossible to keep my dogs off it. If I don't get it done we'll be falling into the seat cushions.

Look for a fabric made from fibers called "Crypton" (has a web site). This company even makes dog beds with the Wegman Weimeraners (sp) on it. This fabric came out of the health care industry and is virtually indestructible. You can spill red wine on it even & it just wipes off. Many different types of fabrics are made out of Crypton, so you have your pick.
I have a couch that has options for covers. The best covers I found are the durable, easy washable ones. More of a canvas type material. Something that doesnt trap the hair or dander.
I have a futon bed/sofa and the mattress is covered with some sort of close knit material and it seems to be ok for my cat. I also have a throw cover on the sofa. But I also give my pet an old wood kitchen chair to sleep on and she loves it. It looks good in here cause it's wood, and I don't care if she ruins it or not. I also have 2 white patio chairs but the seats are extra large and she also loves to sit on there. I put a pillow for her there. Do you really need a sofa in your living room? Why not just have a bunch of chairs and lots of pillows. Put pillows on all the chairs. And when they sit on your chair then you can turn the pillow over so as not to collect all their hair on your clothes when it's your turn to sit on the chair. I think canvas is good, but we used to have immitation leather (naugahyde) which worked well too..
I have some firmly woven fabric upholstery, softer than canvas, like well washed denim. I'd recommend fabric protection (DuPont Teflon™ or comparable products). Also, vacuum regularly. Covering it with a towel where the dog regularly lie will make it easier to keep hair, dander and oils from the pet from soiling it.
