Old Sheets Don't Fit New Beds??...?

Question:My husband and I got new beds last week. Yes, we have 2 twin beds due to the fact that our house is over 100 years old and the mattresses won't fit up the stairs. Ok, the actual mattresses do fit up the stairs-very barely. But we had to literally take the window out of the upstairs to get the box springs in the house! Ohhh, fun that was! Anyhow...these beds are alot thicker and the old (not really) twin sheets and they won't stay on the beds. They fit about half way and then that's it. They pop off at one or the other corners. We cannot afford to go out and buy new sheets for our new thick beds *they are nice too*. How can I get the sheets to stay on the bed?? Is there a way?? The salesman says "ohhhh, sure they'll fit on your new beds"!?! Nope they don't and I do have some nice sheets I don't want to go to waste and I'm all in for saving some money! Can anyone help me our w/some suggestions?? Thanks in advance everyone and God bless!

Answers:
They sell sheet straps to fix your problem. Its a piece of elastic with metal buckles on each end, kinda like suspenders. You can pick them up at most department stores.
Here's a link: http://www.bedbathstore.com/sheetstraps.

sew a 2" wide band of elastic across each corner.
So, you go to put on the sheet and take the elastic under the corner of the mattress. This will hold your sheet in place even though it will not envelope the whole matress. Otherwise, you may just have to get sheets for the new mattress.

Go, Ozzy and Harriet!
My husband and I just recently purchased a new matress and box springs and we had the same problem with regards to the mattresses being much thicker. I looked at Wal-Mart and found "garters" you could purchase to hold the sheets in place. Or you could take the seams out of the corners and add a triangle piece of elastic to the seam which would help them stretch further. I know sheets are not cheap so I hope you have some luck.
If you are having trouble with the fitted sheets, take a piece of elastic and sew on the corners(on a diagonal) that way the sheet comes down the side and just underneath the mattress enough and the elastic can take over from there. Don't worry it won't show.
Get some elastic. Sew onto your each side of the corner to where the elastic will go under the mattress to hold it down. Put it crossways so that it angles from side to end of the sheet. Kinda hard to explain I hope you can figure out what I mean.Hope this helps. I have one of those upstairs bedrooms too and it is a pain to get a mattress up there. Good luck to ya.
It sounds like you have the pillow top type mattress.
They do make what are called deep pocket sheets so next
time you need to buy sheets get that kind.
For now you can go to any department type store (wal-mart)
and get these things ( sorry I don't remember what they are called) that clip on to each corner of your sheets with an elastic band between that you tuck under the matress that way your sheets will not pop off.
look in your local bed and bath store for these things that look like little suspenders - they are elastic, about 4 inches long and have these little metal pinchers on either end. you put them on the corners of the fitted sheets under the mattress to stop the sheets from lifting. if you dont find them in your local bed and bath place, (after all, they want you to buy NEW sheets!) then try your discount dollar store. if you still cant find them, the last remedy is to sew little grograin ribbons and tie the corners under the matress (eeeew - you have to be desperate)..
I have the same problem with my old sheets because after washing them in the washer and drying them in the dryer, they then to shrink. That's true for all my clothes. So lately we always try to hang all our clothes to dry in the garage after we wash them. In Los Angeles where I live, the climate is very dry, not humid at all, so our bed sheets dry in no time.
As for you bed, could it be you bought extra long beds, longer than 80in (six and a half feet)?
