Are architects worth the money for a home addition?

Question:I am thinking about purchasing a house. There is an attached garage. I would like to build a master suite and updated bath above it. Should I hire an architect or will a good contractor know enough?

Answers:
A "good" contractor will have an architect on tap for when he needs him. Architects do come in handy with planning your floor plan though.

no
You may need to file plans for the addition with your town/county building department. Usually architects know what is required and what needs to be listed so that you can get your permit to build. So, I would hire an architect. Just like everything else, everyone charges differently.

You might be able to get away with an architecture student doing the plans for you, (but someone who is almost done with school).
