How important is it to get rid of dust before priming a ceiling?

Question:I just finished the last round of mudding and lots of sanding. I've done a lot of cleaning, but there is still some (mud) dust on the ceiling and floating in the air. I have an air purifier going, but I am anxious to get started on priming. I understand it is important that the paint itself goes on a clean surface, but how important is it to be clean before priming?

Answers:
Brush off any heavy accumulations of dust with a broom.

A small amount of fine dust on the ceiling shouldn't be a problem as paints have wetting agents that will cause that dust to become encapsulated and hidden inside the coating.

If the airborne dust is really thick, and of a radically different color than the ceiling color, you might want to let that settle and not disturb it while the ceiling is wet, or just get rid of it before painting.

Preperation is 95 percent of the job. Get the dust off first.
IMO, it's as important to prime a pristine surface as it is to paint a clean surface.

Remember, particulate or fiber matter stuck in the primer can show right through a good paint job. Preparation really matters. Do it right.

Nobody said it was going to be fun, did they?
I wouldnt go to crazy, you said youve done some cleaning Mud dust doesnt really show through and disolves in paint. You cant get rid of it all. Id start priming.
clean as much as you can with a broom and vacumn. PVA primer(for new drywall) are designed to trap those loose particles and bond them back to the drywall. don't go crazy.
