Which makes more money: an interior decorator or an interior designer?
Question:which makes more money: an interior decorator or an interior designer? On average, what does each make a week? A year?
What colleges have these classes?
Answers:
Generally, interior designers will charge more than interior decorators; they have more schooling (usually a degree) and more states are requiring that they be licensed. An interior decorator does not have to be licensed.
Salary varies because you make your money based on your jobs. A lot of interior designers charge a minimum of $200.00 an hour and up. Interior decorators can charge less, although someone doing quite well, in a good area, and with a little celebrity, could charge the same as a designer. I charge $75.00 per hour.
Many colleges, including community colleges, have interior design programs, usually 2 year, but you can go 4 years. Interior decorating certificates can be gotten usually through online or correspondence courses such as Penn Foster and Sheffield.
No matter which you decide, you will not be making "more money" right away - even if you open your own business. It takes time to get established and you must work to get your name out there.
Yes, as per Kathy--it depends on where, who and how well.where you are, who you are & have as clients and how well you do it. An interior designer can do more & has more training and has taken rigorous testing but some celebrity "designers" have no training at all in anything, or started out as jewelry designers, fashion designers etc. The range of $ is huge--depending on if you are self-employed, do commercial or hospitality (hotels, restaurants etc); have high-end clients etc etc. I am probably the cheapest designer in Los Angeles (I charge $40-50/hr) but I just love making spaces pretty & nice & so I want anyone to afford me. Where I used to work--the designers charged $250.00/hr
Interior designers by far!! They have a college education
Interior decorators do not require a college education
