Ideas for decorating a little boy's room?

Question:My son will be 8 this fall & we are redoing his room this summer (did my daughter's room last summer). He's not a big sports fan, so a sports theme is out. He likes video games, but I'm wanting something that will grow with him a little better. Besides just doing a color theme, does anyone have any suggestions??

Answers:
this will probably not be the answer you like, but ...by the time your son is 11 or 12, you will have to change most of the cute ideas given, because he will not want a little boy room. believe me on this one. so i think your best bet is let him pick his favorite colors or color, be creative with that, let him pick out a bedspread that coordinates and definitely get him a video chair as stated earlier. boys unlike girls don't keep hanging with their teddy bears, firemen, space cadets, or cowboys. i would also get him a huge bulletin board so he can hang up the things that do tweak his interest as the years go by. whatever you do, it will be special to him.

Shrek

Lime green and brown

easy and fun
Do something educational. My best friend has a boy who is a little younger and what we did was get these glowing stars and stuff and recreated the night sky at the exact second he was born. He really liked it.
How about turning his room into space? Stars, meteroids, etc.

Just adding a thought... :)

Oops... didn't noticed someone was posting the same thing.

Umm... Cars? Safari jungle?
A car theme whould be pretty cool.
maybe buying him one of those little tikes beds and getting some road signs to hang up on the wall. The color theme would be more along the blues and greys if you choose this though.
Any favorite animals, or perhaps racing cars or musical instruments. Try and see where his interests lie beyond video world.
When I was at Lowes, I looked through their large selection of wallpaper books, there are some great ideas in the books. Like castles with dragons & soldiers, cowboys, sports themes etc, I almost got dizzy from all the amazing things they have in wallpaper, borders and murals. Good luck!
You can do army themes, animals, skater, cars... What does her really like.. besides video games - find out what interests him and do that...
My son likes his camouflage room with a painted on chalkboard.
You should Check out the Pottery Barn website for kids. They have nice themes for boy rooms. Dinosaurs, space exploration, cars, ships, robots, etc. You could use the color's like green, blue or neutral as a background to highlight the theme of the room.
Get a JcPenney's book or go to JCP.com and check out a real simple bedspread, not a theme or anything. And use your money to buy a comfy video chair (the one that has the speakers built in it) and put his video stuff in there.
That is a tough age to decorate for. Right on the verge of pre-teen and will soon be very opinionated. How about a jungle theme that can later be changed to a tiki theme easily? Some greens and tans, interesting wooden window treatments, and you can stretch the colors to match almost any outdoorsy theme.
A couple of three, people have already started where I would go. One, have you looked at wallpaper? Two, how 'bout something educational? Three, this is a tough age 5 years from "teendom" but definitely not a toddler. I would just add that no matter what you do it WILL NOT be what your son wants in 5 years. So no matter what you do it will not grow with him. I have had 30 year old adults have to get their mother to come in and pick out wallpaper for them. Why not start his education in picking out things he has to live with for 5 years. After all it's your house but it's HIS room. With my daughter I let her pick what she wanted and then, in 30 days I said OK let's order this, after 3 months of prep work and changed minds we finished the room. She loved it until she started high school. She has done a great job on the house she and her family live in now. I like to think it's because she had practice when she was 8. Good Luck!
